Troop 11 conducted their 47th Annual Christmas Tree Pickup and Recycling service on Saturday, January 5, 2019. The event began as an Eagle Scout project by Harold Zecher in 1972, well before the county offered recycling programs, and has become an Alameda holiday tradition for many families. The annual service project eases the burden on the county’s tree collection efforts. Oakland-based fragrance company Juniper Ridge donates the use of a wood chipper. In exchange, they extract essential oils from the pine wood chips to formulate fragrances for their soaps, perfumes, and incense. The mulch stays in Alameda to beautify public gardens. Proceeds from the annual collection of trees are used by the troop to pay for their operational fees and scouting activities throughout the year.
